Cowboy Tears is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter, Oliver Tree released through Atlantic Records.
“This is something that happened very organically,” Oliver Tree of his turn to country on Cowboy Tears, his second LP. “It wasn’t a cash grab or trying to figure out a strategy.”
In fact, inspiration struck while the Santa Cruz native was living on his grandparents’ cattle ranch in Northern California, a place he used to spend summers as a kid. “I was living there for six months during COVID,” he says. “I was working, feeding the animals. I had an acoustic guitar.
I really just got in touch with my roots, my inner cowboy.” But on the first single “Cowboys Don’t Cry,” Tree turns traditional cowboy imagery—stoic, tough—on its head. “I was really heartbroken and I was making an album that was ultimately very emo.
I wanted to make an album with the message that it’s okay for tough guys to cry. I think there’s so much negativity around men crying: They let their anger out and they explode with violence. I’m here to encourage men to cry. It’s healthy for everybody to really let it out, and that’s what I did with this album: I cried my little heart out.”
